Only in the in the last year or so have I discovered why it’s important to take time for yourself. Before then I was constantly planning time for studies, dinners with my boyfriends, coffee dates (or wine sessions) with my friends with very little time for myself in between. This has all changed and it does have a lot to do with where my life is at this point but I have also learnt how important and necessary this change has been.
There are many reasons why its important to take time for yourself. Often we get so caught up in our work or our studies that free time becomes a luxury and when we do have free time available we spread ourselves thin by trying to squeeze in quality time with our best friends, boyfriend and family. Before you know it, the entire weekend has disappeared and a new week has started with its own pressures and challenges and, unless you’ve made time for yourself, this can become quite an exhausting cycle. Stress will slowly start playing a roll and before you know it you might find yourself feeling overwhelmed. That “work hard, play hard” philosophy has a short lifespan.
Scheduling time to and for yourself can be so beneficial. Rather than feel like you’re dividing your time to try and benefit everyone else, it’s important to take some time to prioritise yourself. This doesn’t mean you’re a bad girlfriend/daughter/best friend. Instead, once you decide to take time for yourself, you will feel recharged and will most likely be an even better girlfriend/daughter/best friend.
Personally, I have really come to appreciate a couple hours a week where I can relax quitely, watch YouTube videos, paint my nails, do a hair and face mask and make myself a cup of tea. I try to completely unwind and gather my thoughts. All the things that I may have been stressing over suddenly don’t seem so overwhelming but rather manageable tasks. It’s also in these moments that I feel inspired and create lists for new blog posts, goals or travel plans.
If you don’t already take time for yourself, I encourage you to start. You most certainly deserve it. It’s so wonderful to discover you enjoy your own company.
To remind myself of the time I should be spending with myself I’ve been wearing the Daniel Wellington Dapper St Mawes 34mm. I haven’t worn a watch with a leather strap since I was in primary school but this one really stuck out to me because of the classic style, dark leather and rose gold hardware. I’ve seen so many gorgeous Daniel Wellington watches lately but this one is by far my favourite. I’ve put together a list of my other favourites below. Daniel Wellington has provided all Arum Lilea readers with the discount code “arumlileaDW” to receive 15% off your purchase. Happy shopping!

There’s nothing like just taking some time out for yourself to ground you and put things into perspective. We all lead such busy lives that a couple of hours of mindless nothingness has become an absolute indulgence. So important and yet so frequently overlooked.
Love this post! ?
