Why You Should Stay True To Yourself

A friend of mine sent me a quote this morning.  It said that “validation is for parking” and that “opinions are a dime a dozen”.  I thought the parking validation reference was hilarious but, of course, the essence of the quote was this: be true to yourself because nothing else matters.  You may have always wanted to keep up with your friends on their wild nights out but secretly prefer quiet nights in with a bubble bath, a glass of wine and a great book.  Who cares – you should do what makes you feel good in your spare time because otherwise your spare time is being wasted.  Life is best lived when you are unapologetically yourself.  Your authentic, beautiful, unique self.  The person everyone in your life loves you for being.

Perhaps you have an unbelievably witty sense of humour but you find that some people don’t understand it very well.  Who cares?!  This is your life and you should life it to the fullest and no one should make you feel awkward about your silly jokes.  If they do, cut them loose and move on to finding other people that have to hold their sides to gasp for air in between laughing hysterically and wiping the tears of laugher off their cheeks. That’s the company you should be keeping.  The company that feel their life is enriched when you are your most authentic self.

You are never going to please everyone so stop trying. It’s better to be surrounded by people that you can feel truly at ease and yourself around than those that you feel obligated to spend time with but terrified to reveal your true nature, thoughts and feelings which may differ from theirs.  Again, who cares?  Love yourself for exactly the person you are and all that challenges you’ve faced to be where you are today.  The moment that you do, you will find that the world responds with an equal amount of appreciation.  You should stay true to yourself.  You deserve it.  It’s also one of the most liberating keys to happiness too, so I can promise, you’ll enjoy it!
