The concept of being a woman is something I’ve spent so much time pondering on over the years and I’m sure it will be always be a topic I love to explore and discuss. I’ve spoken about gender-related topics both on this blog and I’ve written magazine articles on the topic too. Being a woman is something I am so passionate about and I love the skin I’m in so much, despite the challenges, every single day. Here’s my version of what it means to be a woman.
Traditionally, a woman has always been viewed as a nurturer. Someone who is honoured with the great gift of being able to bring new life into this world and who bears the responsibility of watching it grow. This is a beautiful concept and really one that acknowledges the natural strength that a woman holds.
In this present moment, as I’m about to become a wife, my version of what it means to be a woman has developed more than the woman I was a year or two ago. I’ve thought so much about the role of what a woman in a marriage means. The vows to “honour and obey” have always annoyed me because I’ve always love the thought of a woman being able to run wild and free, independent and able to make all choices free from any other human being.
Now that it comes time for me to bind my life to someone else’s, I’ve now shifted into a space where I’m ready to be the matriach of my own family. I now realise that I’m not loosing any sense of my power or freedom by getting married. Instead I am taking my strength as a woman into a partnership in which will be able to pool our strengths and blend them in order lay a solid foundation for our family. I am also so blessed to have found a man who is strong and secure enough within himself to love an ambitious woman and recognises the strength of every woman.
Sheryl Sandberg said that one of the biggest career decisions you could make is picking your partner and it’s so true. You need to find a person that wants you to succeed as much as you do. Career-wise, I am so happy that in today’s day and age it is often quite common to enter a boardroom and be surrounded by females. We are able to excel in our careers and contribute to the work force better than ever before. There has never been a time of more female CEOs and I think that this number is going to keep rising with every year that passes by.
Currently this is what it means to be a woman to me. I absolutely love that I can embrace my femininity and wear a beautiful dress, become the wife of a strong man, I adore the idea of becoming a mother and I love that I have the ability to provide for myself and to chase every dream I ever have. One day I also hope to be able to teach my daughter to be a proud, strong woman just as her mom, grandma and great-grandma have been too. There’s a special place in heaven so I truly believe we should all be trying to do that a little bit more. There isn’t anything we can’t do and that should be celebrated.
